Navigating Personal Growth: Understanding the Difference Between a Life Coach and a Counselor

Hey there, Christian women seeking personal growth!

Today, I want to shed some light on a topic that often causes confusion: the difference between a life coach and a therapist or counselor.

As an empathetic accountability coach, it's important to me that you understand the nuances of each profession so you can make an informed decision about which path is right for you.

I’ve been asked many times, “Is life coaching better than counseling?” Definitely not. I support seeking both types of help, but it depends on the needs you’re facing as a busy working woman.

Let’s look at 5 considerations for busy working women to make when seeking personal growth.

1. Purpose and Focus:

Life Coach: When you work with a life coach, you're embarking on a journey focused on achieving your goals and aspirations. We dive deep into your dreams, strengths, and obstacles, crafting actionable plans to help you reach new heights in your personal and professional life. We work with what you’re facing in the present day and how to set you up for a more fulfilling future at work and in your personal life.

Counselor: Counselors are there to support you through emotional and mental challenges related to your past and how it’s impacting you in the present. They help you explore past experiences, manage stress, and heal from trauma, focusing on your overall well-being and mental health.

2. Time Orientation:

Life Coach: As your coach, I'm all about looking forward and taking action. Together, we'll tackle fear, set exciting goals, develop strategies, and move steadily toward a brighter future.

Counselor: Counselors often delve into the past to understand how it shapes your present. Through therapy techniques, they help you process emotions, gain insight, and work through past hurts.

3. Scope of Practice:

Life Coach: I work with Christian working women, addressing a wide range of personal and professional challenges. Whether you're aiming for career growth, better relationships, or increased confidence, I'm here to support you.

Counselor: Counselors specialize in specific areas such as mental health, family therapy, addiction counseling, and trauma recovery. They follow strict guidelines and regulations to ensure ethical practice.

4. Approach and Techniques:

Life Coach: My toolkit includes the Energy Leadership Index Assessment, goal setting, accountability, visualization, and motivational strategies. We'll get creative and tailor our approach to your unique needs and preferences.

Counselor: Counselors use evidence-based therapeutic techniques like CBT, mindfulness, and DBT to help you navigate emotional challenges and develop coping skills.

5. Legal and Ethical Considerations:

Life Coach: While coaching isn't regulated like counseling, ethical coaches like myself uphold confidentiality and prioritize your well-being. I am a member of the International Coaching Federation, which is the gold standard of ethical coaching practices. I don’t encourage hiring a person who calls themselves a “coach” without having taken the time to learn appropriate coaching practices versus applying potentially harmful practices.

Potential clients also ask me, “Is a life coach a therapist?” I want to be clear that I am not. While I have taken significant steps to be a certified life coach, it would not be appropriate or ethical for me to act as a therapist. I don't diagnose or treat mental health conditions.

Counselor: Counselors are licensed professionals who follow strict ethical guidelines and state regulations. They diagnose and treat mental health disorders and adhere to legal requirements regarding confidentiality and informed consent. So, whether you're craving clarity, motivation, and accountability (hello, life coaching!) or seeking support to work through deeper emotional issues (that's where a therapist or counseling comes in), it's all about finding the right fit for your journey.
